Os Carpenters foram uma dupla musical da década de 1970, composta pelos irmãos Karen (1950-1983) e Richard Carpenter (1946). Com seu estilo melódico, eles levaram à parada de sucessos muitas canções no Top 40 da música americana, tornando-se representantes do soft rock e se incluindo entre os artistas mais representativos da década. Embora fossem referidos como "The Carpenters", sendo "the" o artigo definido em inglês, o nome oficial do duo era simplesmente "Carpenters". Durante a década de 1970, quando bandas de rock pesado faziam muito sucesso, Richard e Karen produziram uma música suave e bem distinta daquilo, o que os colocou entre os artistas que mais venderam discos em todos os tempos.

Durante sua carreira de aproximadamente 14 anos, os Carpenters gravaram 11 álbuns, cinco dos quais continham músicas que atingiram o Top 10 das paradas. Fizeram turnês nos Estados Unidos, no Reino Unido, no Japão, na Austrália, nos Países Baixos e na Bélgica. A carreira da dupla chegou ao fim com a morte de Karen em 1983 de parada cardíaca em função de complicações da anorexia nervosa. A cobertura jornalística dada ao fato na época aumentou a consciência da opinião pública sobre as consequências das disfunções alimentares.
